Hugo the Robot

The “Hugo RAS” robotic system is used in Urology to perform a wide range of minimally invasive surgical procedures.

The modular design of the Hugo robot with several quadrants allows the different arms to be used independently and to adapt to the operating room space and the needs of each procedure.

What is Hugo the Robot?

The Medtronic Hugo RAS robot combines wrist-mounted instruments, 3D visualization, and cloud-based surgical video recording to securely record procedures and collect data for analysis and improvement of surgical technique. Additionally, the surgeon's console is open, streamlining team communication and maximizing comfort.

In Urology, the Hugo RAS robotic system allows for surgeries to treat the following oncological and functional pathologies:

  • Prostate cancerwhere the robot's safety and precision prevent side effects such as urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction. Hugo allows for the complete removal of the tumor while preserving functional outcomes.
  • Bladder cancer that requires removal of the organ and reconstruction of the urinary tract using a new bladder or, when this is not possible, creating a conduit to allow urine to drain from the kidneys
  • Kidney cancer that requires the total or partial removal of the organ.
  • Lymph node excision of the abdomen in patients who require it as a result of testicular tumors or other retroperitoneal tumors.
  • Urethral stricture.
  • Correct functional pathologies such as dilation of the renal pelvis and the consequent deterioration of renal function, or prolapse of the bladder through the vagina.

Advantages

Hugo the Robot

  • Minimally invasive.
  • Less bleeding.
  • Lower risk of complications during the operation.
  • Greater surgical precision.
  • Better functional results.
  • Reduction of hospital stay.
  • Better and faster recovery.
  • Faster return to daily activities.

Other applications of

Hugo the Robot

The Hugo robot boasts sophisticated advances in the field of robotics, with a novel system in the controls of the wrist instruments, an open console that facilitates communication between the surgeon and their team, and a 4k 3D screen that provides greater definition and precision of vision with a high capacity for differentiating tissues and structures in the surgical field. It provides greater safety for the patient with the advantages offered by robotic surgery, such as reduced postoperative pain, less need for blood transfusions, shorter hospital stays, and early return to daily activities.

Our experience with

Hugo the Robot

Since the Medtronic Hugo robotic surgery system (RAS) received CE (Conformité Européenne) marking in October 2021 for urological and gynecological procedures, at ROC Clinic we have been committed to this technology by incorporating it into our surgical arsenal.

This acquisition positions us as pioneers in robotic surgery at a national and international level, allowing us to have greater versatility and adaptability when designing personalized treatments for our patients.

Although robotic surgery offers patients the benefits of minimally invasive surgery, only about 3% of surgeries worldwide are performed robotically. Our team has completed the necessary training programs to become certified in the use of Hugo for surgeries that require it.
