The Rezum System is a minimally invasive treatment indicated to relieve symptoms, reduce prostate tissue and clear the obstruction caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a benign growth of the prostate gland that causes an obstruction to the outflow of urine from the bladder. It significantly affects the quality of life of those who suffer from it, causing difficulty in initiating urination, increased frequency of urination, the need to urinate at night and the sensation of incomplete emptying.
The Rezum system uses the thermal energy stored in water vapor to treat obstructive prostate tissue. The release of this energy, when the steam is converted into a liquid state, causes apoptosis or selective cell death of the prostate cells, which are subsequently reabsorbed, thus unblocking the urinary tract.
The application device is introduced through the urethra and the water vapor is injected into the prostate tissue, in areas previously planned in an individualized manner. The fact that it is an endoscopic technique makes it a minimally invasive therapy with few, mild and transitory side effects. The procedure is simple and is performed on an outpatient basis, under local or regional anesthesia or sedation.
The Rezum System comes to urology as an alternative treatment for men with mild to moderate urinary symptoms (weak and short urinary stream, difficulty in starting urination, getting up, needing to urinate at night, dribbling at the end of urination, urgency and urine leakage), i.e. in the early stages of the disease and with prostates smaller than 80cc in size. It is also indicated in patients who do not wish to undergo medical treatment for years, or because of side effects (such as retrograde ejaculation) or drug interactions with their usual treatment.
This treatment preserves ejaculatory function in the majority of patients, which is a therapeutic alternative to be considered in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and reproductive desires, or those for whom the loss of ejaculation has a significant impact on their quality of life.

Treatment with the Rezum system does not produce sexual impotence or definitive urinary incontinence, and in 95% of cases ejaculation is preserved, with no risk of erectile dysfunction.
As this is an outpatient procedure, once it is performed, the patient can return to normal life without discomfort.
Depending on each case, you will have to wear a bladder catheter for 3-7 days. After its removal, you will begin to urinate normally.
Patients proposed for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia with the Rezum system must have mild/moderate symptomatology, be candidates for medical treatment and have a prostate size of less than 80cc.
