Urinary Tract Infection Treatments

The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. When microbes enter this system, they can cause an infection.

These bacteria usually enter the urinary system through the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. Normally, the microbes that cause these infections are native to the large intestine and are found in the stool. If these microbes enter the urethra, they can travel to the bladder, even to the kidneys, and cause an infection.

Most urinary tract infections are in the bladder and are usually not serious if treated early. If left untreated, it can spread to the kidneys causing a serious problem that can cause permanent damage.

Treatments for urinary tract infection

Drugs

In the event that the patient presents symptoms and there is a urinary tract infection, the doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to improve the symptoms and antibiotics to eliminate the infection. Depending on the number of infections that the patient has had or if a urine culture has been taken to guide the specialist, the most appropriate antibiotic will be selected. Depending on the case, further treatment will be considered or not.

Immunotherapy or endovesical instillations

In cases of recurrent infections, treatments such as immunotherapy or endovesical instillations can be considered. The former attempts to strengthen the immune system of the woman with a urinary tract infection; the latter helps to regenerate and reverse the bladder mucosa produced by the infections and make it more difficult for bacteria to reattach to the walls of the bladder.

Preventive measures

Once the urinary tract infection has improved, preventive measures can be taken to avoid recurrence of frequent infections. For this purpose, natural therapies can be applied to regenerate the bacteria in the bladder, such as, for example, the intake of cranberries, D-mannose (a type of sugar that is eliminated by the kidneys reaching high concentrations in the urinary tract and which contains anti-adhesive effects on bacteria) or probiotics.
