At ROC Clinic our priority is to provide excellent medical care with the minimum interruption in our patients' lives. Therefore, we put all our efforts in finding the safest and least complicated medical solution that allows a quick return to normal life.

For the most part, patients who undergo one of the surgical treatments for the removal of kidney or urinary tract stones are usually discharged within 24-72 hours.

Types of interventions performed in 2021 by ROC Clinic's medical team, experts in urinary lithiasis:

95% of patients who underwent ureterorenoscopy (URS) were discharged within 15 hours.
95% of patients who underwent retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) were discharged within 15 hours.
90% of the patients who underwent percutaneous surgery (PCNL) were discharged within 72 hours.
95% of patients who underwent combined endoscopic intrarenal endoscopic surgery (ECIRS) were discharged within 72 hours.

On average, hospital stay was less than 24h in patients undergoing URS and RIRS and 72h in those undergoing PCNL and ECIRS.

What are the side effects of the double J catheter?

The double J catheter presents a series of side effects such as discomfort and irritation caused by the end of the catheter inside the bladder. In order to minimize them, in addition to medical treatment, we try to keep the catheter as short as possible.

How long do I have to have the double J catheter in place?

The length of time a person will need to wear a double J catheter will depend on the complexity of the procedure. Typically, after ureteroscopic surgery or retrograde intrarenal surgery, the time ranges from one week to 10 days. However, if the surgery is more complex, it may be necessary to wear the catheter for about 15 days, and this period may be extended to 21 days.

What activities can or cannot be done while wearing a double J catheter?

A person with a double J catheter can lead a more or less normal life as long as the catheter allows. It is recommended to drink plenty of water or fluids and avoid holding the urge to urinate too much. As far as work is concerned, a double J catheter does not prevent you from working, as long as the work is not excessively physical. There would be no inconvenience in exercising, but it could have a series of consequences associated with it, such as blood with urine.

What diet should I follow if I have kidney stones?

A healthy, varied, Mediterranean diet should be followed, abundant in water, avoiding salt, not only that which is added, but also that which comes from some foods such as cold cuts, avoiding sugars and reducing the intake of saturated fats.
